According to Handelsblatt, nearly 30,000 tax advisors, tax consulting firms, auditors, and auditing firms were invited to participate in a survey for the study. The evaluation was ultimately based on responses from 4,036 tax consulting firms and 829 auditing firms. The study focused, among other things, on the qualifications of employees and the areas of expertise stated in various specializations.

Based on the evaluation results, two separate awards were presented: "Best Tax Advisors 2026" and "Best Auditors 2026." Only those participants who achieved at least 70 percent of the maximum possible score were recognized. According to Handelsblatt, a total of 580 tax advisors and 143 auditors met these requirements.
